<br />
Marines did well at start due to their high training factor and morale. Opening shots with TOW launchers killed 5 Soviet tanks with 6 shots. In fact the first wave of Soviets were annihilated. However Paul had bought a regiment of cheap conscripts and these were the first wave and acted as a human shield for the better troops following up. In the end it was a close draw.<br /><br />We hadn't played the rules for a while and it was the first time we had used the Marines. Usually we play tank heavy and so it will take some time to get used to using a heap of high quality infantry running around in Humvees. I think the tank ratio was 9 US vehicles (a battalion) vs 50+.<br />
<br />
I think it will take some to learn how to best use my Marines. In Multi Player games we usually have 10,000 pts plus 500 for support. I think a few 1 on 1 games at lower points will hone my skills.<br />
<br />

<br />The highlight for me was the US airstrike. FFT3 has an almost narrative approach. The plane entered our edge and you look on a table considering our quality minus factors such as anti air, height etc and a dice roll. The result was that the pilot veered off at the last moment but dropped his bombs before he did so. The result was a close miss on a PT76 crossing a small lake . A pity because it would have been the first Us Air Force plane to SINK a tank!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02129441516835905967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5841849677606734004.post-52577249612123057262013-05-22T16:56:00.001-07:002013-05-22T16:56:12.654-07:00Recent Modern Game

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Times; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">Here
are some photos from a recent modern micro armour game played at Paul’s place.
The table was 6' x 4'. The figures were 6 mm, mainly from GHQ. The rules used
were our usual for modern games, a Fist Full of TOWs. We mainly fight fictional battles from WW3, set in the Central Front in 1989. NATO forces used include US, German Dutch or British. </span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Times; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Times; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">This was the 1st game for

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Times; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">Paul had created the battlefield by using Google
Earth to locate a suitable area in modern-day Germany and then taking a photo
on his iPad 2, and then recreating it on his wargame’s table. You will probably
note two really interesting terrain features on the table. The 1st is Paul's
autobahn overpass complete with armco railing and the 2nd is the quarry on one
flank. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Times; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">The quarry was actually in the photo that Paul
took using Google Earth and so he decided to recreate it. This was interesting
tactical challenge as it was basically a hill in reverse. The quarry was made
of painted cardboard with hand drawn contours and consisted of a series of
layers going down instead of up. Several of the contours were close together
creating cliff faces. A road ran its way through the quarry, but even this was
slow going.</span></div>

Up early for the annual 5 hour drive plus breaks, then a visit to the show, War Memorial, back to the show and then to my friend Anthony's house before going out for dinner. I sat down on a dangerously comfortable electric arm chair and this happened.<br />
<br />
Next thing I know this photo was sent to my wife and daughter. I'm not ashamed, see the dog loves me and I went down reading a new set of rules I had bought. ;-)<br />

Two new armies! Not DBA or HotT, but full, honest to goodness, 25/28mm armies! Not mine but my good friend Frank's. A matched set of Romans and Gauls. Figures by Old Glory, painted by Frank. Here is another element from the HotT armies I commissioned Paul Potter to assemble and paint for me. It is Lancelot as depicted in Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Saga. Here he is based as as a Sneaker element, perhaps advancing on Camelot to seduce Guinevere. He is portrayed bravely moving through the flowers, an accompanying poet is present to write of his deeds.<br />
<br />
If you haven't read Cornwell's novels, you will not be familiar Lancelot as craven, vainglorious, philanderer. He is one of the most despicable characters I have read about in literature.<br />

Watched this film with my wife last night and boy was I disappointed. My wife hates these films but agreed to view it with me. Now I'm out the cost of the film and a choc top ice cream and owe her bigtime for sitting through this sorry excuse for a sequel of a great original film.<br />
<br />
Paul Anderson wrote and directed the film. I think they should have saved some of the money from the predictable 3D special effects and brought in a writer! Direction was fine for the action scenes but the concepts were pedestrian and appropriated. I felt like it was a either a really long ad for a video game or perhaps it is a walkthrough for those who will purchase it.<br />
<br />
Two identical hulking "mutations"decorated with large spikes or nails and ridiculously enormous meat tenderisers were reminiscent of Silent Hill. At one point I fully expected Alice to yell out, "Get away from her you bitch". Perhaps it was a homage to another series Anderson has worked on. And I can accept fast zombies, but fast zombies firing AK47s!! ... While riding motorcycles!!!!!!! Please!<br />
<br />
We should have seen Bait 3D instead.<br />

<span style="font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">One feature of HotT
is the elements. The large variety of different troops available, allow for the
creation of many different troop types. From traditional DBA/Ancients troop
types like Knights, Blades and Warband, to fantasy based such as Lurkers, (hiding
troops or creatures that ambush in difficult terrain), Sneakers, (think hobbits
trying to destroy a magic ring), and dragons. There are even characters such as
Magicians, Clerics and Paladins.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Perhaps my only
complaint is the generic nature of the characters. It would be nice if there
were more chrome with different types of magic users. One immediate change
would be to have a Necromancer who cannot cast the typical spell, but could
resurrect Hordes within 2 inches of the figure instead of on the board base or
stronghold.</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02129441516835905967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5841849677606734004.post-69223339834195312922012-05-29T03:01:00.001-07:002012-09-22T04:41:35.751-07:00Why I Love Hordes of the Things. and protector of both the child king Mordred and his throne. Set during Post-Roman
Britain it depicts the British besieged from the Anglo-Saxons in the East and
raids from the Irish in the West. At the same time, they suffer civil war and
internal power struggles between the British kingdoms. An addition complication
is the friction between the old Druidic religion and the popularity of Christianity.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

given a significant change from the traditional Arthurian mythos is Lancelot.
Despite his betrayal of Arthur due to his adulterous affair with Gwennivere, he

Lancelot is arrogant, cowardly and ultimately self-serving: that is, human. Songs

Reason 2<h4 style="text-align: center;">
It's Free!!</h4>
<br />
Hordes of the Things is a set of
fast play fantasy miniature wargame rules based on the
concepts of the popular De Bellis Antiquitatis (usually known as DBA)
rule set, designed by Phil Barker, Sue
Laflin Barker and Richard Bodley Scott.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the Author's Website</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
"Some time in 2009, these rules went out-of-print and the copyright
reverted to the three
authors. They are now unavailable from any supplier I have been able to
find. I have
consulted Phil and Richard and we are agreed that until it is possible
to publish a new
edition of HOTT, we will make it available at this website. Anyone who
wishes to play
HOTT, has our permission to download a single copy of <a href="http://www.wrg.me.uk/HISTORY/HOTT2.pdf"> HOTT version 2</a>
for his/her personal use, but not to produce copies for sale.
